This piece has an absolutely beautiful Tsuno (antler) theme. The horns curve around the seppadai making a a striking symmetry. The iron is in great shape with a strong patina.
Deer antlers were a deeply meaningful theme for the samurai class. The deer is historically considered a sacred messenger of the gods in Shinto tradition (particularly associated with the Kasuga Grand Shrine). In a military context, antler designs symbolized strength, protection, and fierce loyalty, famously exemplified by the legendary general Sanada Yukimura's horned helmet.
