This iron tsuba is of round form with a well-defined seppa-dai and oval kogai-ana and kozuka-ana flanking a tapered nakago-ana. The plate is finished in a dark, compact iron with a naturally developed patina, showing a fine granular surface consistent with age and handling. The surface is decorated with gold nunome, scattered asymmetrically around the plate. A band of fine linear incisions runs near the rim, creating a subtle framing effect and adding visual rhythm to the composition. The gold inlay is partially worn in places, but remains clearly legible and well integrated into the design. Overall, the workmanship suggests a decorative yet restrained Edo-period piece intended to balance visual interest with practical durability.
Internal notes:
This is a solid mid-level Edo tsuba with appealing surface design and good overall balance. The asanoha ground is neatly executed and the butterfly motif adds a light, seasonal character without becoming overly ornate. The iron quality is respectable, though not exceptional, and the unsigned nature places it squarely in the category of anonymous Edo work rather than a specific school attribution. Condition is honest, with expected wear to the gilt and surface, but no red-flag damage. This would benefit only from gentle conservation cleaning; no restoration is necessary or advised. Photography is clear and functional, though raking light could further emphasize the texture of the incised ground.
