An elegant openwork (sukashi) iron tsuba featuring a symmetrical design of flowing curves, each enclosing delicately inlaid leaves and small floral forms in copper and brass. The outer rim is bordered with a fine rope-like brass inlay, lending the piece a sense of movement and refinement. At the lower and upper quadrants, stylized chrysanthemums appear; symbols of longevity and imperial favor—balanced by leaf and bud motifs in opposing arcs. The overall effect is both formal and organic, reflecting the Edo-period appreciation for symmetry infused with natural rhythm.
The plate itself is forged with visible hammer texture, softened by age and patina. The use of mixed metals, particularly the finely applied gilt edging and contrasting copper leaf inlays, demonstrates skillful work.. The brass border shows honest wear and minor fading consistent with handling, but the inlay remains intact and well-seated.
