This elegant iron mokko-gata tsuba presents a tranquil floral composition of chrysanthemums beneath a drifting cloud. The blossoms, arranged near the rim, are accented with fine copper and brass inlays that highlight the flower centers and scattered dewdrops. On the reverse, a seedling is sprouting, bringing future blossoms. The overall composition evokes autumnal stillness.
The iron plate has been forged with a dense grain and retains a natural, slightly textured surface. The relief carving is moderately high, with crisp petal definition and skillful undercutting that gives the flowers dimension. The inlays are finely seated, showing minimal displacement or loss despite age. The brass zōgan (inlay) of the reverse cloud remains well preserved, adding a balanced glow against the subdued brown-black patina.
The refined mixture of iron carving and soft-metal embellishment suggests influence from the Mito or Kaga schools, both known for their floral motifs and delicate mixed-metal work.
