This round (maru-gata) iron tsuba presents a lush, deeply carved composition of grape clusters (budō) and curling vines rendered in relief across the entire surface. The grapevine motif, often associated with abundance, longevity, and artistic exchange between Japanese and Western decorative trends, was a popular subject among Edo artisans from the late 18th century onward.
The leaves and fruit are finely modeled, with meticulous linework and stippled background (nanako-ji) providing strong contrast and texture. Select areas of the leaves and vine tips are accented with fire gilding, creating a delicate interplay between light and shadow that enhances the organic flow of the design. The gold is applied sparingly but effectively, focusing on leaf veins and grape highlights.
The plate shows a robust, slightly thick rim with even wear and a waxy black quality to the remaining lacquer. The carving has crisp transitions and clean undercutting, suggesting the hand of a skilled craftsman. The overall aesthetic is decorative, symmetrical, and rich in detail.
