This well-crafted mokko-gata iron tsuba features a richly carved scene of windswept pine trees (matsu) beside a rocky outcrop, executed in low relief with fine chiselwork on a nanako ground. The pine tree, a long-standing symbol of endurance, steadfastness, and longevity, contrasts beautifully against the subtle texture of the plate, evoking a tranquil landscape reminiscent of classical Japanese ink painting. The roots and branches of the pine trees are rendered with expressive, fluid lines, while the gold application is carefully restrained—appearing only on select elements to emphasize natural highlights and balance. The plate’s slightly raised rim (mimi) shows light wear consistent with age, but retains its original form and subtle bevel.
