This iron tsuba features an elegant sukashi (openwork) design of a five-petaled cherry blossom (sakura) over grasses. The tsuba bears remnants of extensive nunome-zogan inlay that is entirely lost to time and wear.

The tsuba is forged from fine-grained iron with a dark patinated surface. There are small, honest surface pits and light age wear, but no significant structural flaws

The simplicity and balance of the composition suggest influence from the Owari or Bushū (Edo) schools, both of which favored openwork designs combining natural and auspicious motifs. The disciplined symmetry and minimal embellishment reflect the refined taste of samurai who preferred quiet symbolism over ostentation. The piece’s thickness and confident lines align with work typical of the mid-Edo period, when functionality and artistic restraint were equally prized.
