This elegant iron sukashi (openwork) tsuba depicts a stylized foliage motif. The openwork design is executed with pleasing balance and symmetry, with leaves radiating around the central aperture. The natural forms of the motif give a sense of movement and life, suggesting a skilled hand comfortable working within both functional and decorative traditions.
The piece is forged in solid iron with careful shaping and clean, confident piercings. The rim is rounded and even, offering a comfortable profile suitable for actual sword mounting. The metal’s surface displays a fine dark tone with quiet depth, developed naturally over time.
The design and workmanship are reminiscent of the Higo and Shoami schools, both of which favored naturalistic compositions rendered in openwork iron with attention to proportion and flow. The restrained elegance, confident negative space, and organic leaf pattern align most closely with the aesthetic sensibilities of mid- to late-Edo tsuba artisans.
