This mokko-shaped iron tsuba presents a balanced, four-lobed outline with a refined surface of diagonal lines across larger vertical stripes, creating a subtle textile-like rhythm across the face. The linear patterning adds quiet elegance and reflects the Japanese sensibility for texture and restraint rather than overt decoration. The overall form is practical yet graceful, evoking the utilitarian beauty that characterized much of the Edo-period sword furniture made for everyday wear rather than ostentation.
The tsuba has a beautiful copper fukurin rim showing decorative carving, with gentle vine-like scrolling visible in angled light. The piece has developed a deep, stable patina with warm brown undertones, and the copper patina is still intact save for some rubbing on the rim.
In form and finish, this tsuba recalls the restrained style seen in Higo-influenced works, where surface treatment and silhouette carried aesthetic weight more than pictorial motifs.
