This elegant mokko-gata iron tsuba features chrysanthemums along a flowing stream — a classic 秋草 (akikusa, “autumn grasses”) motif representing longevity and the beauty of impermanence. The chrysanthemums are executed in delicate relief with gilt stamens, while the craggy earth below balances the piece strongly.

A smoothly fitted brass rim (fukurin) encircles the plate, adding refined contrast to the dark grey-brown patina of the iron ground. The reverse mirrors the design in balanced simplicity, suggesting the hand of a late Edo artisan influenced by the Hamano or Mito schools, both known for combining poetic nature scenes with understated luxury.

The overall impression is one of serene balance and meticulous craftsmanship — a tsuba made not for battle, but for the connoisseur’s eye.
