A robust openwork (sukashi) tsuba depicting stylized shishi (guardian lions) amid curling karakusa vines, encircled by a precise sayagata-like jagged border. The symmetrical design suggests early Edo workmanship, possibly of the Higo or Shoami tradition, where bold negative space and rhythmic patterning balanced strength and ornamentation.
The iron surface shows a deep russet patina with traces of hammer texture, lending the piece both gravitas and quiet refinement. The shishi faces, carved in high relief above and below the nakago-ana, express protective ferocity — an auspicious motif meant to ward off evil. The clean execution of the rim and uniform thickness further indicate skilled forging and careful handwork.
