This fuchi is entirely plain (muji), without decorative inlay or carving. The austere surface reflects the wabi-sabi aesthetic of restraint and simplicity, emphasizing balance and strength rather than ornamentation. Such fittings were favored by samurai who valued understated dignity in their sword mountings.
The fuchi is forged from shakudō, with a rich black patina thtat contrasts beautifully with other mounted elements on the sword. The craftsmanship is utilitarian but careful, with smooth external surfaces and visible wear from historical use. The interior shows the hand-cut shaping for the nakago.
Plain shakudō fittings were produced by many schools during the Edo period, especially in workshops supplying practical mountings for working swords. While ornate Goto and Mito school works are well-known, simple muji fittings are often linked to Higo and Mino traditions, which valued function, durability, and martial restraint over decoration.
