Type: MP (Menuki Pair)

This is a pair of antique menuki depicting shishi (lion-dogs) in dynamic, mirrored poses with selective gilt accents. Both figures are compact and muscular, with pronounced manes, rounded haunches, and the characteristic playful yet guarding energy associated with shishi imagery. The carving is relatively deep for menuki of this size, allowing the limbs and curls of the mane to read clearly even under patina. Gilt in the recesses of the fur, paws, and facial details, provides visual contrast without overwhelming the primary metal.

The motif of shishi originates from Chinese guardian lion imagery and was widely adopted in Japanese decorative arts from the Kamakura period onward. In sword fittings they often symbolize vigilance, protection, and auspicious power. Their popularity across koshirae reached a peak in the Edo period, especially among fittings schools catering to daimyō and merchant tastes for classical motifs.
