This fuchi features a bold depiction of rolling waves carved in relief, flowing across the band with great dynamism. Gold inlay dots accent the design, suggesting spray, foam, or even stylized stars above the surf. The wave motif, a long-standing theme in Japanese decorative arts, is both aesthetic and symbolic—representing resilience, unstoppable force, and the ever-changing nature of life. It was particularly admired among samurai as a symbol of strength and endurance.

Executed in shakudo, the fuchi carries a deep black patina, enriched with contrasting gold inlay. The carving is vigorous, with swirling wave crests cut in deep relief and finely textured to capture motion. The execution demonstrates a confident hand, with balance between fluidity of line and structural clarity. The generous weight adds substance, enhancing its impression of power.

Wave motifs were especially popular in the mid-to-late Edo period, often tied to the flourishing of naturalistic and elemental themes in sword mountings. While precise attribution is difficult, the bold carving and dramatic linework suggest influence from the Mito or Yokoya traditions, both of which produced highly animated interpretations of natural forms.
