This fuchi depicts a dragonfly perched on a tree, its outstretched wings rendered in brilliant gilt relief against a deep black shakudō ground. The wings contain subtle shibuichi wire inlay as well. The tonbo was a favored motif among samurai, symbolizing courage, agility, and victory in battle; the insect was known as kachimushi (“the winning insect”) because it flies ever forward and never retreats.
The joinery of this piece is very fine and well-executed.
One of the wings is lifted away from the surface of the piece, but is well-preserved.
This piece is unsigned.
