This elegant fuchi features a deep black shakudō ground adorned with gilt plum blossoms (ume) in relief, each executed with crisp detail and individually placed in a continuous motif around the circumference. The ishime-ji surface has softened with age, lending a subtle contrast between the matte black ground and the remaining bright gold petals.
The plum blossom is a classical symbol of endurance and renewal, often associated with samurai ideals of perseverance through hardship. The design and craftsmanship suggest work from a mid- to late-Edo artisan, possibly in the Mito or Kaga tradition, where gold-on-shakudō floral motifs were especially favored.
