This wakizashi presents a robust and beefy impression and well-balanced shinogi-zukuri form with a shallow curvature and chu-kissaki. The hamon is a striking notare with powerful undulations and a wild wispy flickering flame-like character. The blade remains healthy and free of fatal flaws. The jihada is indistinct due to the age of the polish, though perhaps hints of an itame structure can be seen in raking light. The nakago is mumei with two mekugi-ana and a flat end, leading to the impression that this blade is the product of suriage shortening.
The koshirae is complete and cohesive, featuring a quiet but dignified aesthetic. The fuchi-kashira are iron with mixed metal inlay, depicting scrolling karakusa motifs and stylized leaf forms, now softened by age. The tsuba is a thick iron plate in maru-gata with geometric cutouts filled with large blocks of high quality shakudo, showing dark patina. The habaki is a copper single-piece design with natural tarnish, but the mune surface has a stately "falling rain" pattern. The saya is lacquered in textured black with a subtle diagonal pattern, sweeping troughs adorned with flecks of green mother of pearl. The lacquer shows multiple chips and worn areas, particularly toward the kojiri, consistent with age and handling.
