This is a plain (muji) fuchi, without decorative carving or inlay. The lack of ornamentation itself was often a deliberate aesthetic choice, reflecting the wabi-sabi ethos of simplicity and quiet strength. Such fittings were valued by samurai who preferred austere mountings, emphasizing function and martial dignity over display.
The fuchi is forged in shakudō, known for its deep black patina derived from the gold–copper alloy. The clean, unembellished surface allows the quality of the metal and patina to stand out. Subtle tool marks inside the rim suggest traditional hand-finishing methods typical of Edo-period workshops.
Plain fittings like this were widely used throughout the Edo period, often associated with practical mountings for working swords (shinguntō) or with the Higo and Mino schools, which sometimes produced understated fittings in contrast to the highly ornate work of the Mito and Goto schools. Such simplicity often appealed to the aesthetic ideals of martial minimalism.
