This fuchi bears a subtle kikkō (hexagonal tortoiseshell) pattern, a motif symbolizing longevity, resilience, and good fortune. The hexagon design, inspired by turtle shells, was widely admired in Japanese decorative arts.
The kikkō pattern was executed through fine chiseling and hammerwork on a shakudo ground, with a deep black patina achieved through traditional rokusho techniques. While age and handling have softened the definition of the hexagons, the evenness of the work and the surviving texture demonstrate careful craftsmanship. Its plain yet dignified character suggests it was intended for understated elegance rather than lavish display.
