This fuchi features two dragons chasing one another through a dark sky of nanako ground, executed in bold high relief and partially gilded. The dragon, a symbol of strength, protection, and wisdom, was one of the most popular motifs in Edo period sword fittings. The design emphasizes linear energy, with the body coiling dynamically across the surface, lending a sense of vitality and guardianship to the piece.

This design is less-crowded than other similar pieces, showing an artisan that favored a bold statement of form over intricate detail.  The dragons have patinated to a wonderful rainbow of colors, with purple, red, gold and black fighting for the eye.

The style suggests influence from Bushū or Edo-period Mito workshops, both known for mythological themes and the use of gilt highlights against dark shakudō bases.

This piece is unsigned.
