Type: MS (Menuki Single)
This single menuki is cast and carved in shakudō with areas of gilding, depicting a seated figure with a large gourd slung over the shoulder. The dark shakudō body contrasts with the bright gilt gourd, with additional gilt details at the belt and leg wrappings. The overall form is compact and sculptural, with deeply undercut limbs and drapery folds that show competent carving. The figure is rendered reclining in a relaxed manner, with one leg extended and an arm draped across the body. Given the subject matter, it likely references a Daoist or folk immortal motif associated with gourds, which in East Asian material culture often signify longevity, healing, or the containment of spirits or medicines. The rear shows a standard hollowed interior characteristic of Edo-period menuki production, with the post remaining intact. The surface shows honest age with soft handling smoothing at high points and some wear to the gilding, particularly visible on the gourd where the gilt now presents a muted finish.
