Type: MS (Menuki Single)
This is a single menuki in the form of a feather rendered in gilt copper. The overall form is elongated and gently curved, with a clearly defined shaft and barbs, terminating in a stylized quill point. Carving is fine and consistent throughout, with shallow parallel lines indicating texture along the vane. The piece is worked in low relief with the head rounded to sit comfortably against the tsuka when mounted. The reverse shows a single post for attachment set slightly off center, typical for Edo period menuki construction, and the interior surfaces retain remnants of the original patination and adhesive. The gilding remains bright in the recesses and slightly softened on the higher points from handling, producing a pleasant contrast. No major defects are visible; minor rubbing and small losses to the gilding are present along the highest ridges from age and use, but the piece is in wonderful condition.
