This striking Japanese tessen, likely late Meiji to early Showa in production, embodies the martial ideal through bold calligraphy and refined construction. The fan features iron ribs supporting gilt paper panels with two distinct faces: one side bears the inscription 徳武 (Tokutake), written in powerful black ink with red artist seals to the left; the reverse shows a radiating crest surrounding the characters 武徳 (Butoku, “Martial Virtue”) with crossed weapon motifs, symbols associated with courage, discipline, and mastery of arms. The gold finish retains an elegant sheen, and the brushwork remains crisp and expressive. The edges of the folds show small abrasions, and the iron ribs retain a steady black patina with minor oxidation near the pivot. The kumihimo cord is replaced by an aged leather strap, hardened with time but still intact, a fitting utilitarian choice for field or ceremonial use.
The motifs and inscriptions point to a connection with the martial organization Dai Nippon Butokukai, an institution established in the late 19th century to preserve samurai ethics and promote budo disciplines. Tessen of this style were often presented to instructors or officials in martial associations as marks of honor or achievement. The gold on gold pattern helps date the fan to late Meiji/early Showa.
