bb-006
守吉 - Moriyoshi - Broken Tanto in Koshirae - BB-006

Type: Tanto
Period: Late Edo (19th century)
Mei: 守吉 - Moriyoshi
Hamon: likely choji

This broken tanto, signed 守吉 (Moriyoshi) is mounted in Late Edo style fittings. This signature likely belongs to one of a number of late-Edo smiths who used this mei, most probably from Mino.

The koshirae is definitely tanto style, with an attractive red lacquered saya. The fuchi-kashira is matching, featuring finely wrought images of a large bird flying in front of clouds and the sun, rendered with a fine nanako ground. The fuchi shows the same bird along with a turtle and a gnarled cherry blossom tree. The menuki feature the same scene as well, showing a full set en-suite. The tsukamaki is a thick braid done in hineri-maki, with lots of discoloration due to wear. The tsuba is mokko-gata in iron with inlaid forms of leaves and foliage. There is considerable rust on the tsuba, but the piece has charm, and with some oil the active spots would settle. The saya is fully split, and the kurigata is missing, but it retains its captivating red nashiji texturing. The habaki only retains the inner of the two piece construction.

The tsuba is an iron plate of irregular, almost mokko outline, with a single-sided motif of reeds and rippling water in shallow relief. The rim is softened by oxidation, and one edge shows a chip or corrosion loss. Despite the roughness, the tsuba has charm and character as part of the whole.

The saya is lacquered in a fine red-brown nashiji style with sparkling gold dust beneath the surface. Several sections are reinforced with cloth tape where the lacquer has split; beneath these, chips and separations in the wood are visible. The lacquer elsewhere is cracked and abraded but still retains areas of depth and sheen. A plain brass habaki accompanies the blade.
